FD-258 fingerprint cards, taken in Germany.

In Bochum, Germany since 2002, taken by a forensic fingerprint examiner with over twenty years in official service. More than 400 cards for background checks in the USA, Canada, Australia, South Africa and Asia.

What is it?

What is an FD-258 fingerprint card?

The FD-258 is the FBI's fingerprint form: a card that records impressions of all ten fingers. Authorities abroad require it for background checks – for a job, a visa, a naturalisation or an adoption, among others. We have been preparing these cards in Bochum, Germany since 2002.

The USA is not the only country working with such cards. Canada uses the RCMP form C-216C, South Africa has its own form, and we have also prepared cards for English-speaking countries in Asia. Even within the USA, individual states use their own forms alongside the FD-258.

We print the form supplied by the FBI and take the impressions on it using a special fingerprinting ink from a US manufacturer, of the kind prescribed for this purpose. In more than twenty years exactly one card has been rejected by an authority, for a medically foreseeable reason. Should a card be objected to, we prepare a replacement free of charge.

The impressions are taken by a forensic fingerprint examiner. He learned the discipline in state service and worked for over twenty years as a fingerprint expert for the authorities. Places with that expertise are rare in Germany — our clients travel here from all over the country.

How it works

How is the card prepared?

The appointment takes about 60 minutes. You bring an identity card or passport, we fill in the card, take the impressions and hand you two finished cards. You submit them to the authority yourself – we do not post them.

  1. 01

Pick one of our options and simply send us an appointment request.

  2. 02

We contact you to agree a date and confirm the order, usually within one working day.

  3. 03

To prepare the cards we then send you a form to collect the required details.

  4. 04

On the day, bring your identity card or passport. Preparing both cards takes around 60 minutes.

  5. 05

Payment is made on site — in cash, by debit card or by credit card. You take both cards with you and submit them to the relevant authority yourself.

Common questions

Common questions

What do I need an FD-258 card for?

FD-258 fingerprint cards are required for background checks abroad — for instance when starting a job in the USA, Canada, Australia or South Africa. The purpose is not limited to employment: we prepare cards for any purpose that calls for a fingerprint card, including visa applications, naturalisation, adoption or a firearms licence.

What do I need to bring to the appointment?

A valid identity document — either a national identity card or a passport, one of the two is enough. If the authority has already sent you a form, or you hold a partly completed card, please bring that along as well.

How long does the appointment take?

Preparing both cards takes around 60 minutes. You can take the cards with you straight afterwards.

How many cards do I get?

Two finished cards are included in the price. The second is a spare in case of a query. Some authorities ask for three or four cards — that happens and is no problem: each card beyond the two included costs EUR 120 including VAT.

Do you prepare fingerprint cards other than the FD-258?

Yes. Besides the FD-258 we work with the Canadian RCMP form C-216C and with South African forms, among others, and we have prepared cards for English-speaking countries in Asia. Within the USA, individual states also use their own forms. Just bring yours along — or better still, email it to us in advance so we can prepare the appointment properly.

Can I bring a card that is already filled in?

Yes, and it is welcome. If you have already completed an original or a copy of the card, we take the impressions directly on it.

Do you fill in the ORI number and “Reason Fingerprinted”?

We complete the “Reason Fingerprinted” entry for you. We do not fill in the ORI number: that is the identifier of the agency that forwards or processes your card, and you receive it from the body requesting the check. On pre-filled cards it is usually already there.

Do you post the cards to the authority?

No. You take both cards with you after the appointment and submit them yourself. Which route applies — sending them in directly or using an approved provider — is set by the authority requesting the check.

What happens if the authority rejects my card?

In more than twenty years and over 400 cards, that has happened exactly once, for a medically foreseeable reason. Should a card be objected to, we prepare a replacement free of charge.

Who takes the fingerprints?

A forensic fingerprint examiner. He learned the discipline in state service and worked for over twenty years as a fingerprint expert for the authorities. Since 2002 he has been preparing cards for background checks abroad through Fingerabdruck-Karten.de.

Do I have to come to Bochum?

Yes, the impressions can only be taken on site. Places that competently complete fingerprint cards for foreign authorities are rare in Germany — our clients travel here from all over the country. Allow about 60 minutes for the appointment.

What are the impressions taken with?

With a special fingerprinting ink from a US manufacturer, of the kind prescribed for taking fingerprint cards. The form itself we print — either the one supplied by the FBI or the card you bring along.

How can I pay?

Payment is made on site on the day of the appointment — in cash, by debit card or by credit card.

Where do the appointments take place?
